CHAPTER NINETEEN
“What’s on your mind, bro?” Rhett asked, thumping Beau on his shoulder as he made his way over to one of the other chairs. “You seem lost in thought. Thinking about work?”
“Nope.”
“Well, that’s a first.” Rhett stretched his legs out and leaned his head against the back of the chair. “Usually, all you talk about is work.”
Rhett wasn’t wrong. But Beau felt like a totally different person than he’d been when he’d left Houston. The experiences he’d had in New Hope had added depth to his life. Color to his world. In the same way that Sarah had brought his emotions to life, meeting people from completely different walks of life had broadened his horizons.
“I wasn’t sure what to expect when Julianna said you wanted us to come here,” Rhett said. “But hey, I’m always up for an adventure. What I didn’t expect was to find my brother a changed man. Did you find religion while you were at it? Since you’ve been going to church?”
Beau didn’t give an immediate denial. It wasn’t that he’d found religion, so to speak, but he wasn’t as apathetic about church as he’d once been. And maybe he was a bit more curious about it now, having seen faith in action that he’d never witnessed before. It was an everyday thing for people like Nadine, Eli, Sarah, and his grandfather. He wasn’t used to that.
When he was a kid, they’d only gone to church at Christmas and Easter and for weddings or funerals. As an adult, he’d made the decision to stop going altogether…until he’d met his grandfather. And just like everything else since he’d come to New Hope Falls, his perspective on church and Christians had changed.
“Come on Sunday and see for yourself,” Beau said.
“I didn’t think I had a choice.”
“You’re an adult, Rhett. I’m not going to force you to do anything. Would I like you to come? Sure, but I’m not going to insist on it.”
“Well, when you put it like that…” Rhett lifted his head to stare at him. “I suppose I could tag along.”
Beau grinned. “We’ll see if Julianna feels the same way.”
“You’re giving her a whole new audience to impress. I’m sure she’ll go.”
He couldn’t hold back his chuckle at that. It was true that their sister did like to be the center of attention at times.
“Do you want me to leave so you can rest up a bit?”
Rhett sighed. “I wouldn’t mind a bit of downtime. Got in late last night and then I was up early this morning to catch the flight.”
“Were you out partying last night?” Beau asked.
Rhett shrugged as he pulled his legs in and sat forward before getting to his feet. “Figured I was out of commission for the weekend, so I’d make up for it before we left.”
Beau got up as well. “The life you lead.”
“It’s charmed, isn’t it?”
“I wouldn’t say that, but to each their own.”
“Should I just head over to the lodge at six for dinner?”
“Preferably a little before, so you’re not late.
